Seminar of Leading Swedish Scientist

A seminar of the leading Swedish scientist Anders Persson from Uppsala University was held at Odessa State Environmental University in the period from 13 to 23 March 2017. The event was organized within the framework of the project funded by the Swedish Institute.

Anders Persson, who has significant experience in research, forecasting and teaching at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, the Naval Research Laboratory in Monterey, University of Trento (Italy), UK Met Office, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and WMO, gave mini-course of lectures for OSENU students and teachers.

During the two-week seminar the lecturer addressed the following issues:

  • Interpretation of weather forecast verification statistics
  • Meaning of the Coriolis effect and its relationship with the Coriolis force
  • Rossby planetary waves
  • Indirect circulation and jet streams in the atmosphere
  • Potential vorticity and its practical application in Meteorology
  • Kalman filtering in post-processing output from numerical weather prediction models
  • History of probability theory: perception of randomness, Slutsky-Yule Effect, classic, frequentist and Bayesian probabilities
  • Application of a probabilistic approach to weather forecasting.

During the lectures students and young scientists showed considerable interest to the demonstrated presentations and actively participated in the discussions with the Swedish expert.

In addition, Mr. Persson visited the departments of OSENU Hydrometeorological Institute, the Hydrometeorological Center of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, and took part in the First Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Congress, where he made a presentation on the history and activities of the Swedish Meteorological Society.
